Miyazaki first presented Nausicaä and her postapocalyptic world in a manga series that ran from 1982 up until 1994. This feature-length animé version was released in 1984, and while it predates the founding of Studio Ghibli by one year, it is nevertheless considered their first film. Nausicaä’s people live in the Valley of the Wind, a narrow safe haven between the encroaching desert and the toxic forest where giant insects prowl. Nausicaä wishes nothing more than to study and understand the plants and animals of the forest. However, she soon finds her people and herself caught up in the violent struggles of the neighboring kingdomes Tolmekia and Pejite as they try to bring back the very weapons that destroyed the planet in the Seven Days of Fire a thousand years before.
We will be watching the dubbed version (the Japanese version plays Monday), which features such notable vocal talents as Alison Lohman, Patrick Stewart, James Edward Olmos, Uma Thurman, Shia LaBoeuf, and Mark Hamill.
